General Landscape Uses: Tall, showy, purple wildflower.

Availability: Rarely grown by native plant nurseries.

Description: Wildflower 4 feet tall with stalks of deep blue or purple nodding flowers.

Dimensions: Typically 4 feet in height.

Growth Rate: Moderate.

Range: Central United States from North Dakota south to Texas, east to Georgia and Jackson and Gadsden counties.

Habitats: Open woods, sandhills

Soils: Moist, well-drained sandy soils, with or without humus.

Nutritional Requirements: Low; it grows in nutrient poor soils.

Salt Water Tolerance: Low; does not tolerate long-term flooding by salt or brackish water.

Salt Wind Tolerance: Low; salt wind may burn the leaves.

Drought Tolerance: High; does not require any supplemental water once established.

Light Requirements: Full sun to light shade.

Flower Color: Deep blue or purple

Flower Characteristics: Showy.

Flowering Season: May to July.

Fruit: Seed pods.
