Notas de Conservación/Conservation Notes: Fue listada como Elemento Crítico por el DRNA en 1988, 1999 y 2007. Fue incluida como una especie de interés para la conservación global por el Center for Plant Conservation (1992), pero no fue clasificada como en riesgo de extinción debido a datos insuficientes. Fue incluida como una especie conocida de tres o menos localidades en Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes por Figueroa Colon & Woodbury (1996), pero no como una especie conocida de una sola localidad por Figueroa Colon (1996). Opuntia abjecta del Sur de Florida y O. militaris del sureste de Cuba fueron puestas en sinonimia bajo O. triacantha durante la reciente evaluación de la Lista Roja global de la UICN de las Cactaceae (basado en Hunt 2006). Sin embargo, Majure (2014 y com. email 2015) cree que estos tres taxones son distintos y puede justificarse una revisión de la clasificación de la Lista Roja de O. triacantha.

This was listed as a Critical Element by DNER in 1988, 1999 and 2007. It was included as a species of global conservation concern by the Center for Plant Conservation (1992), but it was not ranked as being at risk of extinction due to insufficient data. It was included as a species known from three or fewer locations in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by Figueroa Colon & Woodbury (1996), but not as a species limited to a single locality by Figueroa Colon (1996). Opuntia abjecta from South Florida and O. militaris from southeastern Cuba were placed into synonymy under O. triacantha during the recent IUCN global Red List assessment of the Cactaceae (based on Hunt 2006). However, Majure (2014 and email comm. 2015) believes that these three taxa are distinct and a revision of the Red List rank of O. triacantha may be warranted.
