This was listed as a Critical Element by DNER in 1988, 1999 (as critically imperiled) and 2007, and it was listed as Endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1993 under the Endangered Species Act. It was included as a species of global conservation concern by the Center for Plant Conservation (1992), who ranked it as a priority A species (a taxon at risk of global extinction within 5 years). It was included as a species known from three or fewer locations in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by Figueroa Colon & Woodbury (1996), and as a species known from a single locality by Figueroa Colon (1996). Miller et al. (2012b) gave it a provisional global rank of Critically Endangered using the IUCN Red List criteria, based on one location.
