Historia y distribución/History and distribution: A rare sedge in southwestern Puerto Rico at low elevations. Major geographic regions following Axelrod (2011): Southwestern Coastal Lowlands (Lajas). Botanically unique areas following Axelrod (2011): none. Possibly extirpated and last collected by either McKenzie (a.n. 12919 SJ) or George Proctor (44138 SJ).

Notas de Conservación/Conservation Notes: Cyperus nanus var. subtenuis, ahora tratada como Cyperus subtenuis fue listada como una especie rara en Puerto Rico por Woodbury et al. (1975), quienes la clasificaron como una especie en peligro no endémica de Puerto Rico (especie No. 197). Cyperus nanus, presuntamente sensu lato, fue posteriormente listada como un Elemento Crítico por el DRNA en 1988, 1999 y 2007. Ninguno de los dos taxones fue incluido como una especie conocida de tres o menos localidades en Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes por Figueroa Colon & Woodbury (1996) o por Figueroa Colon (1996). Ambos taxones son raros.

Cyperus nanus var. subtenuis, now treated as Cyperus subtenuis was listed as a rare species in Puerto Rico by Woodbury et al. (1975), who classified it as an endangered species not endemic to Puerto Rico (species No. 197). Cyperus nanus, presumably sensu lato, was subsequently listed as a Critical Element by DNER in 1988, 1999 and 2007. Neither taxon was included as a species known from three or fewer locations in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by Figueroa Colon & Woodbury (1996) or by Figueroa Colon (1996). Both taxa are rare.
