Native Range: Bermuda, the West Indies, southeastern United States, southern Mexico, Central America and northern South America.

History in the Bahamas: Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh for shallow salt water nearly throughout the Archipelago (Andros and New Providence to San Salvador and Great Inagua).

Comments: In shallow coastal waters where it forms dense and extensive marine meadows; nearly throughout the Archipelago (Correll & Correll, 1982).
