Native Range: The West Indies, southeastern United States, southern Mexico and Central America.

History in the Bahamas: Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh for shallow salt water in the northwestern and southeastern Commonwealth (Grand Bahama, Abaco, Mayaguana). Reported by Correll & Correll (1982: 74-76, with illustrations) for shallow coastal waters of bays and inlets nearly throughout the Commonwealth (regions 10-9, 6, 3-2).
