Native Range: The West Indies, North America, Mexico, Central America, South America and the Old World in both temperate and tropical regions. Note: Some authors separate S. ambigua from the New World and S. perennis from the Old World.

History in the Bahamas: Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh for “salinas” especially along the edges of mangrove areas throughout the Archipelago (from Abaco and Grand Bahama to the Turks and Caicos Islands and Inagua). Reported by Correll & Correll (1982: 459) for coastal salt marshes and flats nearly throughout the Archipelago (regions 10-8, 6-1).
