Native Range: The West Indies, southern United States, Mexico, Central America, South America and the Old World.

History in the Bahamas: Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh for tree trunks and in sinkholes from the northwestern to central Commonwealth (Abaco, New Providence, Andros, Cat Island, Great Exuma). Reported by Correll & Correll (1982: 2-3, with illustrations) for moist flatwoods and banana holes in the northwestern to central Commonwealth (regions 10-6). In addition to islands reported by Britton & Millspaugh, this was also collected by D.S. Correll on Grand Bahama (40539 FTG).
