Native Range: The West Indies, North America, Mexico, Central America and South America.

History in the Bahamas: Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh for fresh water pools and ditches in the northwestern and central Commonwealth (Grand Bahama, Andros, New Providence, Great Exuma). Reported by Correll & Correll (1982: 68-69, with illustrations) as submerged in ponds nearly throughout the Commonwealth (regions 10-5, 3).
