Native Range: The West Indes, Mexico, Central America and South America; widely cultivated and sometimes sometimes naturalized elsewhere.

History in the Bahamas: Reported by Correll & Correll (1982: 937-938, with illustrations) for coppices and thickets, often near the coast, in the northern Commonwealth (region 10).

Comments: Correll & Correll described two varieties: var. cubensis, which is this species and native, and var. penduliflorus (now Malvaviscus penduliflorus), which is not native to the Bahamas and is perhaps only cultivated here.

Synonyms: Malvaviscus arboreus var. cubensis, Malvaviscus sagraeana [orth. var.].
