Native Range: The West Indies, peninsular Florida, southern Mexico and Central America. Reported for northern South America (Stadley & Williams 1975, Correll & Correll 1982), apparently in error.

History in the Bahamas: On beach dunes and in coastal coppices, and in pinelands, open flats, open fields and disturbed sites; nearly throughout the archipelago (Correll & Correll, 1982).
