Native Range: The West Indies, Mexico, Cental America and South America; naturalized in the continental United States (Florida, Rhode Island).

History in the Bahamas: Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh for disturbed areas near dwellings nearly throughout the Archipelago (Abaco, New Providence, Great Guana Cay, Cat Island, Little San Salvador, Fortune Island, Grand Turk). Reported by Correll & Correll (1982: 470-471) for disturbed areas nearly throughout the Archipelago (regions 10-2). Perhaps not recently collected in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Comments: This is widely cultivated as a vegetable in the West Indies and elsewhere.
