Native Range: The West Indies, Mexico, Central America and South America; also in the eastern continental United States, where perhaps introduced.

History in the Bahamas: Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh for sandy disturbed areas in the northwestern and southeastern Archipelago (Grand Bahama, New Providence, Grand Turk, Inagua). Reported by Correll & Correll (1982: 467-468, with illustrations) for wet and dry disturbed areas and beaches nearly throughout the Archipelago (regions 10, 8-5, 2-1).

Synonyms: Achyranthes polygonoides.
