Native Range: The West Indies, peninsular Florida, Mexico, Central America, South America and the Old World.

History in the Bahamas: Reported in 1920 by Britton & Millspaugh for wet saline soil nearly throught the Archipelago (North Cat Cay, Grand Bahama, Andros, New Providence, Aklin's Island, Inagua, Caicos). Reported by Correll & Correll (1982: 16-18, with illustrations) for mangrove swamps and low coastal marshes and thickets throughout the Archipelago (regions 10-1).
