Comments: Previously ranked as imperiled in South Florida, in 2017 we have re-ranked this as critically imperiled due to declining populations in Miami-Dade County, Everglades National Park and Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park. Declines are due to habitat degradation in Miami-Dade County and Everglades National Park and predation of plants by the Mexican bromeliad weevil (Metamasius callizona) in the Fakahatchee. See also Florida Natural Areas Inventory's Field Guide to the Rare Plants of Florida page (Chafin 2000). Also visit our Natives For Your Neighborhood website for more information and images.
