The West Indies (Greater Antilles, Bahamas), southeastern United States, Mexico and Central America. Plants previously determined as this from Venezuela are H. baillonis (Hokche et al. 2008).

Presencia/Occurence: Ausente/Absent.

Historia y distribución/History and distribution: Not reported for Puerto Rico by Liogier & Martorell (2000) or previous authors. Reported by Acevedo-Rodríguez & Strong (2005) from the southern coast of Puerto Rico based on one collection from 1902 (Britton & Cowell 1325 US) from the Bahía de Tallaboa in Peñuelas, and one collection from 1979 (Vicente s.n. US) from Jobos Bay, Cayo Pájaros, Salinas. This was previously misidentified as H. baillonis. Modern surveys are needed.
