Description:
A small bird measuring up to 5 inches in length. Male black with orange patches on chest, wings, tail. Female and juveniles with gray head and back, and yellow patches on chest, wings, tail. Frequently fans tail and spreads wings.
Range:
Breeds in North America and winters in southern North America, Central America, South America, and the West Indies.
Distribution and Abundance in Florida:
Habitat(s):
Second growth forests and thickets.
Reproduction:
1 to 5 brown-specked white eggs are laid in a cup of grass placed in the fork of a tree or shrub.

This species feeds on insects and fruit.

Can be found in South Florida during the winter months.
